DescART.es is a creative initiative founded in February 2015 by Croydon artist and entrepreneur, Leoni Descartes. Leoni began curating exhibitions and hosting her own regular life drawing and arts workshops in what was once a corridor at Matthews Yard. Since then, she established a local art gallery, solidified MY as a leading community arts hub in the town centre, managing multiple online networks and delivering a consistent programme of cultural events over while growing her own classes, portfolio and network.

Leoni has worked closely with the Croydon community, meeting and collaborating with more than 80 local artists, curating more than 30 exhibitions, selling more than five thousand pounds of local artwork, managing unique street art projects outside Matthews Yard with local talent, as well as setting up a not-for-profit to ensure affordable opportunities and space remains available to Croydon creatives for generations to come.

2019 sees Leoni organise the second Croydon Creative Month festival which will collaborate with venues all over Croydon to provide art workshops, business drop-ins and skills available for all, working with local artists and industry experts. Leoni has established herself as a passionate, prominent businesswoman and cultural force in a time of significant socio-economic change in Croydon, working closely with emerging talent and underrepresented groups.

Descart.es is available for private commissions and can offer the following creative services for organisations:

Leoni’s day job running the not-for-profit arm of Matthews Yard involves the utilisation of interior and exterior spaces to be community testing grounds for new ideas to happen in the visual and performing arts at a community, cultural space in the heart of her hometown, delivering an engaging, provocative programme of events year round.

About Leoni’s Personal Artworks
Painting and drawing for as long as she can remember with a passionate interest in business, design, biology, chemistry and physics – in particular pharmacology, much of her work utilises and fuses this knowledge while paying tribute to traditional and contemporary art. Themes of her personal work include and are never limited to – the scientific documentation of life, the transition and processes of organic matter, along with the reduction of complex structures to their simplest form. Searching for the beauty in all aspects of existence, desperately trying to convey a moment, in futile attempts to reconcile herself with the mortality of life and the imperfect nature and fragility of the human condition. Leoni enjoys creating illustrative concepts be that character, environment and bespoke commissions for intimate projects that will challenge along with those for the general public.
